Nonasymptotic elastoinertial turbulence for asymptotic drag reduction

چکیده
Polymer-induced drag reduction in turbulent flow is bounded by a universal upper limit with increasing fluid elasticity. For decades, efforts to understand this maximum asymptote have focused on the search for an ultimate state whose dynamics no longer influenced polymer Contrary common assumption, study shows that behind converged mean flow, underlying continues evolve through distinct stages, sign of convergence.

Drag reduction in bubbly Taylor-Couette turbulence.
In Taylor-Couette flow the total energy dissipation rate and therefore the drag can be determined by measuring the torque on the system. We do so for Reynolds numbers between Re=7 x 10(4) and Re=10(6) after having injected (i) small bubbles (R=1 mm) up to a volume concentration of alpha=5% and (ii) buoyant particles (rhop/rhol=0.14) of comparable volume concentration. In case (i) we observe a c...
متن کاملApplication of Neural Network to Turbulence Control for Drag Reduction
A new adaptive controller based on a neural network was constructed and applied to turbulent channel ow for drag reduction. A simple control network, which employs blowing and suction at the wall based only on quantities measured at the wall, was shown to reduce the skin friction by as much as 20% in direct numerical simulations of low-Reynolds number turbulent channel ow. Also, a pattern was o...
متن کاملPhysics and control of wall turbulence for drag reduction.
Turbulence physics responsible for high skin-friction drag in turbulent boundary layers is first reviewed. A self-sustaining process of near-wall turbulence structures is then discussed from the perspective of controlling this process for the purpose of skin-friction drag reduction. After recognizing that key parts of this self-sustaining process are linear, a linear systems approach to boundar...
